Influence of alpha thalassaemia on the retinopathy of homozygous sickle cell disease.

چکیده
Homozygous alpha+ thalassaemia (alpha-/alpha-) ameliorates some of the clinical manifestations of homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease but its effect on retinal complications remains unknown. This has been assessed by visual examination and fluorescein angiography in 39 subjects with SS disease and homozygous alpha+ thalassaemia and in 39 age/sex matched controls with SS disease but with a normal alpha globin genotype (alpha alpha/alpha alpha). The results indicate that homozygous alpha+ thalassaemia reduces the extent of peripheral retinal vessel closure but has no apparent effect on the frequency of proliferative sickle retinopathy.

Can Trimodal Distribution of HbS Levels in Sickle Cell Traits Be Used To Predict the Associated Alpha-Thalassemia For Screening Cases in Central India?
Background: Until now, trimodal distribution of HbS has been seen by six different studies in the world when associated with alpha-thalassemia with confirmation by corresponding alpha-genotyping studies. The RBC indices reduce as alpha-globin genes reduce in sickle cell trait (SCT) patients, which decreases the extent of intra-vascular sickling and thus betters the clinical cou...
متن کاملAlpha thalassaemia and the macular vasculature in homozygous sickle cell disease.
The interaction of homozygous alpha thalassaemia 2 with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease results in a generally milder haematological picture with less intravascular sickling, less haemolysis, and higher haemoglobin levels. Clinically, patients are generally more mildly affected, though not all vaso-occlusive complications are reduced. Thus there is a possibility that the advantages gained b...
متن کاملSteady state hemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume in homozygous sickle cell disease patients in Lagos, Nigeria
Background: Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin causing myriad of pathology including anemia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the baseline values of steady state hemoglobin and packed cell volume as a guide to managing the early recognition of hemolytic crises in sickle cell anemia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the sickle cell patients atte...
متن کاملBeta-thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia as paradigms of hypercoagulability.
Thalassaemia and sickle cell disease (SCD) represent the most common forms of hereditary haemolytic anaemia and result from a partial or complete lack of synthesis of one of the major alpha- or beta-globin chains of haemoglobin A or from a single amino acid mutation (beta(6Glu-->Val)) of the beta-globin chain respectively. Although they have different pathophysiologies, patients with these cond...
متن کاملSome observations on the measurement of haemoglobin A2 and S percentages by high performance liquid chromatography in the presence and absence of alpha thalassaemia.
AIMS To assess the accuracy and precision of measuring haemoglobin A(2) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the presence and absence of sickle cell trait, with or without alpha thalassaemia trait. METHODS The haemoglobin A(2) percentage and the haemoglobin A(2) plus S percentages were determined by HPLC on 82 normal controls and 78 patients with sickle cell trait, respectively...
